Good News from Caldera Action
The Pajarito Group partners with Caldera Action to advocate for increased access to, as well as the restoration and protection of, the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). For years, Caldera Action has worked for better management of VCNP, from science-based management to restricted development of roads and hotels – always with the view to stay true to VCNP’s mandate to protect our public treasure. Toward these ends, Caldera Action has been working to get the VCNP redesignated as a National Park Preserve. On April 6, we were delighted when the Los Alamos County Council voted unanimously in favor of National Park Service (NPS) management of the VCNP. This followed an endorsement of the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce also in favor of NPS management.
This resolution, which should be helpful in supporting the NPS idea in Washington, followed two listening sessions in Los Alamos County, which drew about 100 people, with an overwhelming majority speaking in favor of NPS management.
Please call the Santa Fe offices of Senators Bingaman and Udall to encourage them to change VCNP to a Park Preserve. —Jody Benson
