Protect New Mexico's Headwaters

Pecos Falls

Help the state protect our most pristine water. Have you walked along a forested mountain stream, fished a remote stretch of trout water or jumped in a mountain lake in New Mexico? We need you to be in Santa Fe any day from September 14 to 17 to call for these headwater protections.
The state of New Mexico will ask the Water Quality Control Commission (WQCC) in the second week of September to protect our state's headwaters as 'Outstanding Water'.

The Commission could protect over 700 miles of rivers and streams, 29 lakes and 6,000 acres of wetlands in New Mexico. But it won't happen without your voice.

Here are the details:

What: Come to Santa Fe for the WQCC hearings and request the protection of Outstanding National Resource Waters (ONRW) designation for New Mexico's headwaters.

When: Tuesday, September 14th through Friday, September 17th. Public testimony will be each day at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Where: Room 307 in the State Capital Building (the Roundhouse), 490 Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe. Parking is available at the PERA Building across Old Santa Fe Trail from the Capital. (map)

Do you need a ride? Contact Jim O'Donnell at huajatollas@hotmail.com or 575-779-1181 if you'd like to coordinate your trip to the hearings with others.

It is up to you to make the Commissioners do the right thing, an RSVP isn't necessary but it helps us plan.

This is a must-win as it will set precedence on protecting New Mexico's waters far into the future.

Thanks for all you do,
Dan Lorimier
Rio Grande Sierra Club

P.S If you can't make it to the hearings, send an e-mail to the WQCC supporting ONRW protections for our headwaters .
